You can tell quite a lot about a school by the displays in its classrooms, halls and corridors. Tatty, tired and dated displays suggest a school community which shares those characteristics; shiny, bright and fresh are attributes which should run through a school community and its displays. We have school buildings which are of various vintages from the 1950s main block – and the much loved “well” of the Hall – to the 1990s K block and Science Block to the 21st century glass palace which is W block. It is a mixed tariff of ages and conditions but we are committed to making our buildings come alive through great images of trips and visits, photos of productions, concerts and fixtures and overall celebrating our students and our school.
It has been great this week to see the new displays in W blocks and K block which are wonderful visual depictions of the life of our school. They tell the stories of trips and destinations, concerts and performances and show our young people having great experiences, genuine personal development – and fun! The walls almost feel alive and the spirit of Wallingford School pervades. Thank you to our team who have driven this forward as everyone in school has been talking about how impressive it all looks during this week.
On Sunday I will be attending the Remembrance Service in Wallingford and it is always a moving and memorable event with the whole town coming together to remember the sacrifice of others for the freedoms which we enjoy today. We will mark Remembrance Day on Tuesday in school with two minutes’ silence and a playing of the last post. It is always a moving event and one that we mark with pride and reflection.
